Magnum Photos, founded in 1947 by Robert Capa, Henri Cartier-Bresson, George Rodger, David Seymour and Bill Vandivert, is one of the world's most important photo agencies. Until recently, the show curated by L. Fritz Gruber in the fall of 1956 for the photokina in Cologne was considered the earliest Magnum group exhibition. After more than 50 years, however, an exhibition that was shown in five Austrian cities in 1955/56 has now been rediscovered: Magnum Photo. face of time. The publication documents the exhibition completely for the first time: a total of 83 vintage prints by eight Magnum photographers - Werner Bischof, Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Capa, Ernst Haas, Erich Lessing , Jean Marquis, Inge Morath and Marc Riboud – are depicted in large format. The central theme of the show was “photographic humanism”: images of people and their living spaces beyond the sensational – taken by committed photo reporters who believe in the world-improving, educational impulses of authentic documentation.
