Fred Stein was born in Dresden in 1909 and studied law in Leipzig. Politically active from an early age and prevented from practicing his profession by the Nazi regime as a Jew, he fled to Paris in 1933. Stein began to devote himself to photography, and the former hobby soon became a means of making a living. He portrayed many émigré intellectuals and artists, leading European personalities in whose circles he and his wife moved. In addition, on his forays through Paris, he captured snapshots full of hope and beauty in a difficult time marked by despair. Interned after the outbreak of war, Fred Stein and his wife fled to New York in 1941. His passion became his profession: he documented life in the streets of the vibrant city and created portraits of writers, artists and politicians, from Einstein to Dorothy Parker to Henry Kissinger and Frank Lloyd Wright.
