Max Scheler (1928-2003) was the son of the philosopher of the same name. He studied art history and German in Munich and also worked as a photographer and assisted Herbert List on joint trips through Italy, Spain and Greece. In the 1950s he lived in Rome and worked as a freelance photojournalist in Europe, North Africa, the Middle East and Asia for magazines such as Picture Post, Look, Life, Paris Match and Münchener Illustrierte. In 1959 he moved to Hamburg and worked for Stern. From 1975 he launched the magazine GEO. He was its deputy editor-in-chief until 1980. He then worked for Merian until 1992. In the last 15 years of his life, Scheler organized international exhibitions and published books from the estate of his friend Herbert List.
