Alfred Eisenstaedt (1898-1995), the American photographer of German origin, was largely self-taught in photography. He was regarded as a photographer with an unerring sense for the moment, who repeatedly succeeded in capturing important events in a picture. After emigrating to the USA in 1936, the newly founded magazine LIFE employed him as one of its first photojournalists. He worked for LIFE until his death and illustrated more than 2500 photo reports.
