Description of Carlo Naya - Im Dogenpalast in Venedig, Venedig, ca. 1875

After a fire destroyed parts of the interior of the Doge's Palace in Venice in 1483, large areas had to be rebuilt. Work began on the Scala dei Giganti, the staircase leading up to the state apartments on the second floor of the palace. It occupies an important place in the history of Venice, as for centuries the coronation of the new Doges - the elected rulers of Venice - took place in the gallery at the top of this staircase. Completed in 1550, the Staircase of the Giants owes its name to the two larger-than-life sculptures by Jacopo Sansovino.
