Description of Herbert List - Nachmittags auf der Straße, Italien, 1953

Herbert List (1903 - 1975) was a classically trained artist who combined his love of photography with a fascination for surrealism and classicism. List was born into a wealthy Hamburg merchant family and began an apprenticeship with a Heidelberg coffee merchant in 1921 while studying literature and art history at the University of Heidelberg. The young List began taking photographs while traveling for the coffee business between 1924 and 1928. In 1930, his artistic inclinations and connection to the European avant-garde brought him together with the photographer Andreas Feininger, who introduced his new friend to the Rolleiflex, a more sophisticated camera that enabled targeted composition of images. Under the dual influence of the Surrealist movement on the one hand and the Bauhaus artists on the other, List photographed still lifes and his friends and developed his own style. He has described his paintings as "composed visions in which arrangements attempt to capture the magical essence that inhabits and animates the world of appearances."
