Jürgen Schadeberg (1931-2020) was a South African photographer and filmmaker of German origin. He became known for his photos showing the lives of South African blacks in Johannesburg in the 1950s. He first attended a school for optics and photography technology in Berlin, then worked for the German press agency in Hamburg and moved to Johannesburg in South Africa in 1950. As photo editor of Drum magazine, which was read primarily by the black majority, he documented the lives of the South African population photographically. His photos of Nelson Mandela, for example, are world famous.
