Description of Jürgen Schadeberg – Zu Besuch in Deutschland 1942 – 2012
At the age of eleven, Jürgen Schadeberg took his first "relevant" photo. It shows a group of young people playing an accordion and drinking beer in a Berlin air raid shelter in 1942 - and combines threat and joy of life. The later star photographer's instinct for the right moment is already evident here. Especially when different cultures come together, Schadeberg finds a motif. He has an eye for small events and big moments in contemporary history, for passion plays in Oberammergau, GDR punks on Alexanderplatz or the construction of the Wall. The most recent photographs are a few weeks old and show dancing couples in »Clärchens Ballhaus«, newspaper readers and gallery visitors. His German pictures are a welcome greeting to us, a greeting with the look of a curious stranger.
