Margaret Bourke-White (1904-1971) was born in New York and grew up in rough New Jersey. She studied with photo secessionist Clarence White and worked as a successful industrial photographer from 1920. She took epic shots of factories and skyscrapers, among other things. Bourke-White was a pioneer in many ways. She was the first foreign photographer allowed to take photos in the Soviet Union and the first female photographer for Life magazine. Bourke-White is one of the most important photographers of all today because of her ability to capture feelings and tell stories with her photos.
