The Hanau-born photographer Silke Lauffs (*1969) studied at the Art and Design School in Hanover and graduated in interior design. At the beginning of the 90s, while studying design and art in Hamburg, she also began to engage with photography. She later worked for a large architectural firm in New York. Back in Germany she found a new creative home in Berlin. She photographed the beauty of the country on numerous trips to India, Myanmar, Nepal and Southeast Asia. Her often deserted pictures appear almost distant and mystical and as if from a forgotten time. “It is this atmosphere that I want to capture, these rare moments – fascinating and tragic, timeless and fleeting,” says Lauffs about her work. The black and white photographs, taken with a panoramic camera, are often gelatin silver prints that are then hand-toned in sepia. Long exposure times give the images a blur that is reminiscent of the Pictorialists.
